Male and Female representation in the media

Think about Selena and Kaylynn's presentations and reflect on the different representations of men and women. Respond below.

  1. Both of these presentations were very factual and accurate to me. They both showed the reality of the affects of the media on teenagers. It is true that girls today strive to look as beautiful as the girls they see in the media or boys trying to be someone like they see portrayed in the media. In reality, all these people are just like us who are taking advantage of the public eye and the fact that teenagers or peers our age would want to be like them.

  2. Both Kaylynn and Selena's projects correctly portrayed the men and women in society today. We can see that women and teens look up to celebrities like Kim Kardashian or others who are regular people like us, just living in the limelight at all times. I liked the fact that Selena touched upon women that want "barbie-like proportions". This shows that those girls cannot attain the perfection they dream of. The media showcases men and women in both a good and bad way. Men and boys feel that it is appropriate to drink, smoke, curse, get tattoos, and not even attend school. This is because they think of rappers, such as Wiz Khalifa and Lil Wayne, as Kaylynn mentioned, to be their role models. However, this is actually the WORST thing to do. Celebrities are only displayed in this way, whether it is bad or good, in order to gain more attention and publicity. It is necessary for them to remain in the public eye, regardless of the circumstances or consequences. Television shows, websites, and music are all examples of where teenagers obtain their behavior.

  3. Selena and Kaylynn both showed how media effects men and women. I think the fact that Kaylynn showed how the negative effect rappers have on boys was very relevant and important considering how media has taken over in today's society. Boys feel they have to rebel and not respect any female other than their mother, forget about school, do illegal things and so much more because of their favorite artists raps. Selena also showed the effects of the media but she mentioned the effect it has on women. She talked about the hardships women go through to try to look beautiful which is also relevant because so many women try to be like models or celebrities seen on magazines and T.V. So many of the photos are Photoshopped and young teenagers and women in general don't realize this. Because of this idea of perfection women strive for this look and it only leads to complications. I think the media has been brainwashing all of us because even though we get older and we understand truth behind these pictures, we still see magazines of perfect girls with perfect bodies and feel the need to look the same. The media specifically surrounding celebrities and models creates this "perfect" world which is corrupting us as human beings.

  4. Selena’s and Kaylynn’s presentations were very accurate and to the point. In today’s society whatever is on the media is said to be appropriate behavior but most of the time behavior from the media is inappropriate. There are several shows that speak about people’s bad behavior and these people are usually celebrities or professional athletes, people in which children and teenagers look up to. On these shows everything is spoken about. Some topics that are up for discussion are drug use, stealing, drinking, smoking, and excessive partying. The mention of these bad behaviors wrongly influences children into thinking bad behavior is ok.
In my opinion children and teenagers are the ones who are mainly affected by the media. Children and Teenagers absorb whatever they see so if it’s on television its thought have as being acceptable.
Women are always shown as “perfect”. Perfect meaning perfect skin, perfect body, perfect facial features and etc.; No women is completely perfect but because of photo shop and other websites making celebrities look completely flawless women are tricked into thinking these unattainable attributes are societies idea of beautiful. Due to this more and more women are being diagnosed with bulimia and are becoming anorexic. Other then women, men are also being affected with things on the media. Most boys love rap and think whatever their favorite rappers do they should be able to do also. One thing that rappers do that can badly influence these young boys is the smoking of marijuana. Smoking marijuana is illegal but because famous rappers smoke these young men feel that its something they must do in order to be compared to their favorite rappers. In conclusion, I feel media can be very negative to children both male and female. Media makes everything bad seem like its acceptable and it makes people feel insecure about what they were born with. Over the years media has and I feel it is only changing more negatively.

  5. Both mine and Kaylynn's project went hand and hand. We touched areas that the media does not want to show. We had solid research on what goes on "behind the scenes" in media. It is sad that this information isn't given to viewers. Viewers are blinded by all of the "fancy" things that these celebrities portray. Never do they get the real inside scoop of what really goes on. These celebrities go through hardships just as we do. Media instead tries to glamorize these hardships when in reality they shouldn't be. We touched issues that can relate to each and every one of us. We all have a celebrity that we look up to and it helps knowing that they aren't perfect. We now know the their secrets and shouldn't be inclined to imitating everything they do. I believe that we did a good job in showing how men and women are viewed in media.

  6. In media there are different perspectives of how men and women should act. However lately more attention has been placed on women rather than men. When i say this, I mean that people focus more when women make mistakes rather than men. For example when Kim Kardashian and her husband broke up after 72 days , people are making fun of her. This is not right because they never made fun of the guy that owns the playboy mansion for having a million girlfriends. I believe our society needs to watch how we portray ourselves and others. We are human so we are bound to mistakes and we can't easily judge others because you never know if you are going to be in that predicament. Selena and Kaylynn's project did a good job portraying these aspects.

  7. Both of these projects seemed very fair. In my opinion, men in the media are constantly being praised and promoted for their unsightly actions, whereas, if women in the media did the same thing, they would be subjected to harsh criticism and loss of jobs and opportunities. Overall, there is a huge double standard between the two sexes in the media, something that needs to change ASAP.

  8. I really enjoyed Selena & Kaylynn's presentations and thought that they were 100% true. Women in media are pressured to seem perfect while the men can do whatever they please and not be reprimanded for it. If a woman in media smokes weed, the whole world looks at her differently and starts to talk trash. But if a rapper or any male in media smokes weed, he doesn't get looked at the way that the woman does and is sort of praised for doing so. I believe this is totally unfair but nothing can be done to change this cause this has been around for ages and will continue to occur. But I liked the presentations and agree with them all the way :)

  9. In today’s society it is important to recognize the effects the media has on us as a whole. Both Selena’s projects and mine demonstrated the negatives of the media on our current generation. Television shows and celebrity websites often praise both a male and female celebrity’s for outrageous behaviors. Because of this praise one may believe it is fine to imitate these actions to become get the public’s attention. Little does one know, this attention that will be received from the public is unacceptable. Girls and boys today constantly idol these celebrities, this causes them to led a life that is rather destructive. I believe it is important for messages Selena and I spoke on in our presentations to be enforced more in today’s society.

  10. I think that both of these projects were very informative and blunt. They both covered very serious topics that are still a big issue today. It is very disappointing how much television and media can negatively impact people of all ages, in particular girls and women in general. Media exaggerstes the social and physical expectations of women. I deeply respect how much Selena and Kaylynn portray media's negative effects on women and men representation.

Selena and Kaylynn's projects were very good and very accurate for today's society. Teens and even children look up to these people as if they want the life they are living. These 'men' smoke, do drugs, apparently get women, and get paid for it. Some women nowadays strive to have the perfect physique, do drugs, and just set a terrible example for young viewers. For example, children looked up to Miley Cyrus because of her role in Hannah Montana. Miley is an 'adult' now. She isn't Hannah Montana anymore; however, her fans still look up to her because that's what they praise her for. I don't think you would want your child to be like the current Miley Cyrus, just saying.
I find it kind of annoying how people actually strive for the lives of these falsely presented people. They don't realize that what they do and even what they say/rap about are wrong, well most of it.
Overall, Selena and Kaylynn's presentation depicted the topics well.

  12. I completely agree with Selena's take on how women in the media are portrayed in today's society. Celebrity women on TV and in movies sometimes don't have the best reputation and when people become aware of that, it can have an affect on the behavior of those easily influenced. I also agree to the point made in Kaylynn's project. Women are pressured to become this ideal figure and it sometimes seems as though men don't have any standards set for them. Big male stars that are constantly in the media can practically get away with anything, and that's definitely not fair.

I agree with both Selena and Kaylnn's project on female and male representation in media is very accurate, because we are often put under a lot of pressure by the media too look like someone we absolutely can't, or to be someone that we don't want to be. It has an effect on everyones behavior, people falsely idol these people, because they often think that they are better than everyone else, but the truth is that they are normal people too, people who's lives hav been twisted and messed with and put out for everyone to see, they are not someone to be idolized.

  14. Both presentations are very accurate and informative as this is a growing issue in today's society. Both men and women could act in the same degrading and inappropriate way, yet only women are patronized. Maybe it's because we're still in that sexist "men are better than women" phase. But in any case, this sort of bad publicity of bad behavior that put men on pedestals could and is setting an example to younger boys that look up to them. It's as if we're advocating the fact that it's cool to smoke, or dress a certain way, or try to pull this "bad boy" sort of act.

  16. Selena and Kaylynn's project touched on a very important issue pertaining the media today. Women and men can act in a degrading manner, yet the woman is usually condemned, while the man tends to be praised for his actions. This is a very sexist portrayal of gender's in the media. I feel that women are often pressured to act in a degrading manner because they feel it is the only way to obtain fame considering that most of the time women with good reputations are not as highly popular as women with bad reputations. The media uses women as objects of admirations and subliminally teaches other women to be subconscious about themselves which causes them to have lower self esteems because they don't look a certain way. While men, can drink, smoke, and live outrageous life styles and somehow still be considered positive role models. There is a huge double standard not only in the media but in general society.

  17. Both Kaylynn & Selena's project were great. They touched base on how reality influnces the lives of young teenagers. We look up to these celebrities as role models but we forget th facts that they are not who we think we are. We look at skinny models and think the only way to be be pretty and get attention is through be a size 2. Their project really showed how easily influenced we are. It was an eye opener to see that stylists make up artists are the ones responsible for the people we someday hope to be.

  18. I enjopyed both these projects. It is good to inform people of the negative personifications of celebirties. What people see influences them, and a lot of younger people really idolize these celebirties that don't do positive things. I especially ejoyed Selenas presentation on what people assume a woman in to look like in this society. The fact that the media suggest that the only way to be beautiful is to be a skinny model is deplorable. I hope people open their eyes and realize the damage that is being done to young women.
