Here are the topics you and your classmates presented on:
The pros and cons of social networks (Julissa C, Migdalia, Harini, Tianna) , the evolution of the internet (Ciana, Alex), cyberbullying (Julissa G), the evolution and effects of the smartphone (Kiara, Arbnora), the effect of photography on society (Kelley, Emely), the effect of the camera (Chris), video games and youth (Nicole), reality TV's effect on youth/culture (Hema,Sonja ), the pros and cons of laptop notetaking (Carriel), celebrities and women in the media (Kaylynn, Selena), the contributions of Steve Jobs (Paola) and the social impact of texting (Myranda). Other students did papers.
What presentation or presentations do you think had the most impact on you? Respond thoughtfully to the presentations and what you took away from them.
I really liked the presentations on reality TV's effect on youth/culture because it is a serious issue in our society today. I really liked when Hema addressed the problem with teen pregnancy because i feel that it is increasing nowadays. There are plenty of reality TV shows about teen pregnancy and it seems to me that it gives young women the hope of being on TV if they were to get pregnant. I think it is a serious problem and the media is only making it worse.
ReplyDeleteAll of the presentations were amazing and very informative. The presentations that made the most impact on me was Kaylynn's & Selena's topics. They both explained and showed the influences on teenagers in today's society and who are the "real" people that teenagers idolize today. Kaylynn showed us that teenage boys are admiring men who smoke, get tattoos, and rap about nonsense sometimes and gain fame. Selena showed us that we are trying to be the fake girls that we see in the media. These were both problems that are to be brought up and is a problem in society.
ReplyDeleteAll of the presentations were informative, but i believe Emely's presentation grabbed my attention. Her presentation was about photography. She stated that Jacob Riis used photography to show the other side of reality. People always sugar coated how people lived, but Riis did not believe in this. His photography showed how people lived in the city and what was really going on in the city streets. I couldn't believe how his pictures actually created a turning point on the way people lived. It's amazing how photography was only used for special occasions or events and now everyone has a camera.
ReplyDeleteI found all the PowerPoint presentations to be very thorough and descriptive. Students in our media class have researched topics on the evolution of cameras and phones and the effects of texting, social networks, reality tv shows, celebrities, video games and laptops.I really enjoyed Julissa G., Sonja,Hema, Nicole, and Myranda's topics.
ReplyDeleteJulissa's powerepoint was very informative and touched upon the different effects and types of bullying. It was shocking to know how bullying can go so far. Sonja and Hema both introduced good points about reality television shows. I can agree with them and say that it has definitely impacted the teenagers in a negative way. It has led to a boom in pregnancy and has caused teens to act differently than they normally do. For example, the media creates a glamorous life for pregnant girls, so in effect, these girls think that it is okay to get pregnant in order to shed their old lives and have this new luxurious one.
Nicole and Myranda's topics projects exhibited the effects of texting and video games. Texting leads to less interaction face to face. It can also influence procrastination among girls and boys our age. According to Nicole, studies have shown that the video games that contain violence
increase a negative kind of behavior among children.
Overall, these topics had a great impact on me. It gave a heavy amount of information to me and encouraged me to be aware of these things.
I really enjoyed all the presentations: they were fun to see and taught me things I didn't know about. The presentation that really grabbed my attention would be Nicole's presentation on media and children. I have two younger nephews (8,5) and one younger niece (6) and because of the fact that I'm close to them made Nicole's presentation impact me more. I had no idea that shows and games could affect a kid that much and it showed me that I should prevent them from playing and watching violent things and prevent them from watching too much tv. But overall all the presentations were great!
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed all of the presentations. I feel they were all very well done, very informative, and it was obvious that everyone did a lot of research on their projects. But of all the projects the ones that really caught my attention were the projects presented by: Abnora, Carriel, and Kelley. These projects were all very different but I found them interesting because they were controversial and highly interesting. I enjoyed Abnora’s project on the evolution of smart phones because I find it amazing how much technology has developed over the years. The way smart phones have come such a long way really makes me think about how the phones will look like in the future. Another project I enjoyed was Carriel’s.
ReplyDeleteCarriel’s project was also very interesting because it was something that I deal with daily. Personally, I enjoy using laptops but sometimes they can be annoying, for example: they tend to be untrustworthy when it comes to battery life and if the laptop itself was to shut down all the information would be lost. Plus they can be very distracting due to the internet access. I think pen and paper is still the best strategy for note taking. The next project I will discuss is Kelley’s.
Kelley’s project caught my attention because it was different. It amazes me that back in the day photography was only used on special occasions especially compared to now that basically everyone has a camera. The fact that the Americans were uninformed about what was going on during the Vietnam War and photography had to be used to show the truth showed a new type of media. Overall, these projects really grabbed my attention and my eyes are open to a broader area of topics.
I think all the presentations I saw in class were informative and I thought they were all subjects everyone knows about but doesn't know exactly. Through my own presentation, as well as listening to everyone else's presentation, I learned about the things I would not normally think or know about.
ReplyDeleteThe presentations that had the most impact on me were the presentations on social networking. As a social networker, I definitely know the pros and cons to social networking and how it affects my everyday life but I never looked at the big picture, how it truly affects me. I know this subconsciously, but because I don't see that it harms me to the fullest, I don't take it as seriously as I should and would probably lead me into some sort of trouble. I would care for 1 minute and not care for 1 hour. Maybe, just maybe, this goes out to all the other social networkers throughout the world.
All of the presentations were enjoyable and brought me into seeing things in a way I actually haven't before. I've always known about social networks, reality TV, texting, photography, but I've been overlooking all the fine print up until the start of everyone's presentations.
ReplyDeleteLike Chris, of all the presentations, the ones that made the most impact on me were the ones involving social networking. For example, I'd always known about how networks like Myspace or Facebook wreck relationships and I see these things almost every other day, but I didn't realize how high the statistics were. The numbers were surprising and brought me to the belief that social networking is as beneficial as it is loss-making to a person.
I really enjoyed all of the presentations. They were all very informative. I learned a lot from Kaylynn's and Selena's powerpoint. They touched upon a very serious issue in media today. People fail to realize that there is a double standard in society pertaining to men and women's portrayal in medid. I also really liked Nicole Carumba's project. It showed how children's behavior is affected by the uneducational TV shows that are on TV today. Sonja's presentation was also very informative. We are all guilty of watching Reality TV shows. It was shocking to see the degrading things people are willing to do for fame and money.
ReplyDeleteAll of the presentations were great. I believe that Kaylynn and Selena's was a real eye opener. I think that medias role in women's life was great. We need to know that the women we see on paper arent the same in real life. There ae professionals who make these people the way they are. We need to learn to be ourselves and not look to others for inspiration. Celebrities pay people to help them look good so it is up to us to feel comfortable in our own skin
ReplyDeleteI think Julissa Guzman's project was the one I learned most from, I feel that within our day and age, a lot of people are being bullied online and most of us already understand what cyberbullying is. Yet, it's still a huge problem within our society. I feel that with all this information that we are getting and by learning that cyberbullying we can hurt people and cause them to do drastic things. With everyone learning about this, they can pass this information and lesson on to their friends and others.
ReplyDeleteSelena's presentation was also for interesting because we all look up to certain stars, trying to match their beauty and trying to look like them, when they themselves, don't even look like that. It really shows the pressure that media puts on us as women and shows why many women go to such extreme lengths to be something they can never be.
All of the presentations that I've seen were definitely enlightening. Although I was very familiar with a majority of the topics presented, I still believe that I learned a lot more than what I knew before. I believe the most important presentations are the ones on the pros and cons of social networking. It's important that we are informed of what social networking really means and the role it plays in our development as individuals. I also believe that Kaylynn's and Selena's presentations were incredibly important as well. It's necessary that we as young women understand the difficulties being a young woman in today's world can be because of the media.
ReplyDeleteAll the presentation were really good. The presentation that had the most impact on me was Selena's project on women in the media. Her presentation opened my eyes to see that women have a lot of pressure in the media and that there is a double standard. It was good to see that the women we see on the magazines are not even what they really look like, but are photoshopped. Overall, us girls shouldn't feel pressured to look like a barbie doll, cause even celebrities don't look like that.
ReplyDeleteI feel as though we all did a great job on our projects and we all had solid research. Each of us went straight to the point and there wasn't any confusion. My favorite project was the one on the evolution of the cell phone. Almost everyone has a cell phone and to think that people back then didn't have cell phones seems crazy to us. Abnora clearly pointed out the reasons as to why they didn't have them. For example, they were too heavy or technology wasn't as advanced as it is now. I also liekd the illustrations of the old cell phones in comparison to the new ones we use today. Cell phones are taking the place of house phones and maybe even computers. People rather search things through their phones rather than sign on to a computer. All in all we all wroked hard on our projects and worked to the best of our ability.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed all the preentations, and I know everyone did and excellent job. The topic I enjoyed the most was Myranda's topic on texting versus phone calls. I can relate to her topic for various reasons. I, for one, enjoy phone conversations more with certain people. With other people, I prefer to text. I notice that a lot of people rather text because they feel more confident when people cannot see nor hear them. the feel a sense of empowerment, but I still prefer to tell someone something face-to-face.
ReplyDeleteGood job to everyone on their presentations. I believe we all did very well and learned a lot from each others' projects.
ReplyDeleteThe presentation that impacted me the most would have to be Kaylynn's. It's very sad that some people look up to these rappers/singers who set a terrible example. I didn't even know that a lot of them acted the way they do. They use drugs, apparently 'get all the ladies,' and they get praised for it. It just irks me.
I also really enjoyed Arbnora's presentation. I really liked the way she put her presentation all together and the phones that she showed and how she showed them. It was really cool.
Still, all the presentations were very good.
