The Role of our class in this school

The article on Freedom of the Press was meant for you to examine the changing role of media in culture and society.  Post in the comments your thoughts that you crafted in class yesterday.

21 comments:

  1. The freedom of the press is an American citizen’s right to express their own personal beliefs and ideas through the mediums of the media. Examples of some of these mediums are newspapers, the radio, news, and magazines. If a person chooses to express their opinions through these mediums, they are completely entitled to. As a young adult, I believe it is my duty to take advantage of my right to express myself freely through the media. Considering that I am living through an exciting and exceptionally unique period of time, my opinions, ideas, and thoughts regarding politics and our social benefits can most likely be classified with the opinions, ideas, and thoughts of young adults during this time period when future social studies textbooks are published. Think of it this way—why wouldn’t one want to be a part of his or her cultures’ development? It’s an enlightening experience not only for ourselves, but for the benefit of others soon to come. If a student fifty years from now had a report due on the thoughts and opinions of a teenager living in the Bronx, New York ten years after September 11th, 2001, the ideas I’ve taken the opportunity to express on this blog or a local newspaper or anywhere else are possibly ones that they’d agree with, disagree with, read about, write about, etc. That seems like a pretty amazing thought, at least to me. So why not go for the opportunity and take advantage over what I’ve been given as a citizen of the United States right now? Fifty years from now, that right could even be taken away from us. And if that every does happen, I’m sure a teenager in the year 2061 might be significantly jealous of the fact that I can express myself freely for everyone to see. With proper restrictions adhering to the medium, of course.

  2. “Freedom of the Press,” an article from the U.S. Department of State publication, Rights of the People: Individual Freedom and the Bill of Rights, explains the progression of this first amendment right over the years as well as several setbacks and hindrances it faced along the way. Interspersed throughout the document are quotes from various high officials over the years that either condemn or protect this right. I found these to be most interesting, especially when the quote regarded a specific court case that either furthered or placed provisions on freedom of the press, such as Chief Justice Warren E. Burger’s opinion on the ruling in Richmond Newspapers vs. Virginia (1980), which argued that freedom of the press goes beyond simply allowing the press to print the news and should really also include an individuals freedom to listen and form their own opinions from this knowledge.

The article also touches on figures in American history that have been brought down by this free press that we try so hard to protect, such as Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson, who had their extra-marital affairs publicized and their reputations damaged. Despite this, neither Hamilton nor Jefferson condemned media, instead, they offered validation for the press’s actions, stating that "they fill their newspapers with falsehoods, calumnies and audacities, [and Hamilton] shall protect them in their right of lying and calumniating."

  3. Freedom of the Press – Blog post
Stated in the beginning of the article is the First Amendment to the U.S Constitution: “Congress shall make no law . . . abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press.” This shows that we, as Americans, have the right to freedom of speech and freedom of the press. This allows us to say what we feel about anything, whether it be out loud or published in a magazine or, in our case, a blog post. There should be no limitation as to what can or cannot be published because of our rights.
Walter Lippmann, a 20th-century American columnist, wrote: “A free press is not a privilege, but an organic necessity in a great society.” With this statement it is understood that the role of the press in society is a necessity. I like to thing that this class is the same. It is a privilege and a necessity to our AMSU community. I think this because without us, how would the students and faculty know about events happening in the school. With our newspaper, everyone won’t be as clueless to what’s going on. With our yearbook, everyone could go back and remember important events that happened. This just shows that, just like the press to society, we are an important part to AMSU’s community.

  4. Our country would not be as organized and well-established as it is today if it wasn’t for freedom of the press. It was so important to our country, that the first amendment was established to protect that right. This right allows us Americans to speak our minds and form ideas on paper that can benefit our future as a country. Thanks to our freedom of the press, we are not unnecessarily limited on what we can write or publish. If it wasn’t for our freedom of the press, some of our most important historical documents wouldn’t have been written, and Americans would be suppressed. Luckily, today, we have the right to publish as long as we remain reasonable with it. What we publish can benefit hundreds, maybe even millions of people. The freedom of the press is crucially important to maintain and use. It is one of the foundations that keep this country up and going, and I, as an American, am proud to admit that I am grateful for this right.

  5. The Media Arts and Applications class can be compared to the press in a way, since we will be covering the yearbook, and the probable upcoming events at the school. If we didn’t have the freedom to cover certain events, than the school newspaper and yearbook wouldn’t be as enticing and tasteful as we hope it will be. If were to be censured (i.e. not being able to put pictures or decorate the yearbook and/or paper as desired).
As the homework reading stated: "A free press is not a privilege, but an organic necessity in a great society." Hence, we should be able to, especially in this class, be able to spread the news of the school during our classes project of creating the schools yearbook for the class year 2011-2012. But enough about just this class, the freedom of the press is important to America as a whole. Without the freedom of the press, many news coverage’s that should be known would he forbade from going public . I agree that certain things should be censored, considering the audition that would be reading the material, but a persons right to spread news is God-given and cannot be taken away.

  6. Freedom of the Press is almost an essential part of a democratic country, and the removal of this right is a stifling of people voicing their thoughts. Although the officials might find this right a nuisance and potentially threatening to their position in the government, it’s actually beneficial as it can provide widespread information to all different parts of the world whether it’s handwritten, printed, or posted on the internet. However, the editing out of ideas or any kind of censorship for the government’s sake can also suggest that they’re withholding some vital information, and this of course can lead to controversy.

  7. I feel that this article is great in expressing freedom of speech and freedom of the press. Technology is very important and will continue to be important in people’s lives as the years go on. Although many things many not be true it is still considered freedom of speech and congress cannot make any laws against that. As a support to that statement many newspapers have said “You shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free”. That quote really makes me think that even though everyone has access to computers nowadays and many things can be written, it doesn’t matter as long as you know what the truth is.
I feel like our media class relates to this article because of the use of technology. The class is going to mostly be about the yearbook and how were going use technology to get it ready for the seniors. I like that we get to have a set of pages to show our each individual creations and express our freedom of speech in art for the yearbook.

  8. The role of a school’s media class is similar to that of the media throughout the world. The media throughout the world is important to civilians. It helps people to know what is occurring throughout the world whether it is through the newspaper, radio, or television. These people helps us to know when something is going right or wrong, whether if it is just in the world or within a state. Information can include trials that may have happened during the day, a natural disaster in a different country, or even pop culture news. It is these people’s jobs to get information out to the public as soon as they can.
A school’s media class is similar because it gets information out to the students of the school as soon as possible. This class helps students to know what their school is all about. These people help students to know what kind of event may be coming up soon or even review how an event was. This media class is also responsible for sports events. They can say who won at a basketball, volleyball, or softball game. Not only do students get the opportunity to know all of this, but also know what tragedies have happened, such as someone dying or a teacher leaving the school. We are lucky to have such an opportunity to know all this information in less than a day, or even less than a couple of hours.

  9. The “Freedom of the Press” article showed the advantages and disadvantages to this privilege. It is important that we, as citizens of the United States, give and receive information. We are able to do this with the help of the press and media.
Throughout the years, writers have struggled to gain this right and were often jailed or punished for preaching the truth. Although it may have been the truth, others found it illegal and no sense of privacy. It was only recently that bystanders were and are allowed to listen in on a court hearing. Radios, news, and other media source were kept under a watchful eye. They had to be looked at closely in case any illegal or offensive matter took place.
Today, we are given the opportunity to write whatever and however we would like. Even protestors can stand up for their beliefs as long as they do so peacefully. We should appreciate struggle it took to gain this right benefits us, especially in the way we communicate.

  10. The article “Freedom of the Press” talks about the role of the media in society. The role of the press is to inform the people of what is occurring in their environment politically, socially, economically, etc. The press may uncover truths that may or may not be beneficial to public official, but the role of the press is to expose anything that is being hidden in society. I found it interesting when government officials would sue newspaper companies, relating to what the press uncovered and shared to the public. I also found interesting the debates about whether or not a person’s personal life should in fact be something that should be published. Our Media Arts Class can be compared to the press because we are here to inform the student body of what occurs at our school. Things like the Yearbook and MSG Varsity serve to show the student body memories made at the events at AMSU.

  11. This article is speaking about Freedom of the Press. In the past, Freedom of the Press was seen as “the very fact of the criticism as an evil” whether it was fact or fiction because it created doubt in public officials. But although some considered it a criticism of evil it was recognized as something necessary. Today Freedom of the Press is still continuously used daily in what is called media. Media is a combination of television, newspapers, and the internet. Media is used to gather and share information about current events. For example, media was used highly this past weekend for the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy. The media broadcasted the memorial on live television that way everyone who wanted to be a part of the memorial could be aware of what was happening. So if media if gathering and sharing information how does it relate to The Academy of Mount Saint Ursula.
In the Academy of Mount Saint Ursula media can be seen in several places. It is seen on the school news, announcements, yearbooks, and etc. In this media arts and applications class I expect that it will be filled with all these different types of media and more. In this class freedom of the press does relate to us because even though it is necessary to share information with others it should still be appropriate.

  12. Response to “Freedom of the Press” Article
This class was made possible due to the trials and fights that were discussed throughout this article. Freedom of the press is part of our first amendment but not many people believed it to be as important as the rest. This article is an example of exercising our freedom of the press right.
“Accurate information will not always come directly from the government, but may be offered by an independent source...fearlessness of such sources…” This phrase can fit to our school, with government as the teachers or principals. The students are the independent sources and we should not be afraid to say something because of what someone else thinks because if we just tell the truth, we will be backed up. Our job as part of the yearbook is to inform. Inform those people who do not attend AMSU of the laughs, academics, sports, dances- the memories! Let those people know what made these four years truly last a lifetime. “Neither the people nor the press ought to know everything that goes on in the government…” Be aware that not every little thing needs to be published, such as fights, expulsions, or insider jokes. As with the on-line press, social networks can help us with the yearbook. We can use pictures posted on Facebook, which pertain to MSU events, to fill in those empty spots for photos. Maybe even use the memory posted on someone’s status as the topic of our next page.
Freedom of the press opens a wide range of ideas. You never know, one of these random ideas can turn out to be our next yearbook theme.

  13. After the reading, I feel that our school’s newspaper or press is very similar to the press that I read. For one, we’re not necessarily allowed to just publish anything we want. Everything has to be reread before publication then approved. For example, in our school’s newsletter, it portrays the school as a home away from home. When our school gives out pamphlets to prospective students, it tends to be quite misleading. From my own experience, I know this school did not meet my expectations given by the pamphlets. This is probably because of the restrictions made upon the school’s press. I think if students had the chance, they would added in the pamphlets how unappetizing the school’s lunch is or how we really don’t do much in the school’s clubs, but eat. Knowing these things would make the school look bad, the school has to censor some of the materials published. It’s the same outside as it in our school. We may have the power of freedom of speech, but these powers can only be used to a certain extent.

  14. Freedom of the press in todays society

Freedom of the press allows one to express their opinion openly with any enforcement. In the article we read, it was stated that a free press is not a privilege but an organic necessity in a great society. This shows that as the society today continues to grow the reliance of technology is greater. People rely mostly on news papers, television, and radios to gain information about our world. This just enforces the need for this amendment and why free press is highly important.

As a Media Arts and Applications class I believe free press plays a major role in class and a very important factor. Being that we will be documenting and recording much information then reporting it, the freedom of press will give us permission to do so. I think in this class we should follow the structure of the bill of rights, no one should be allowed to abridge the freedom of the press produced in our class. Of coarse as high school students our work will remain appropriate but in the end we should be allowed to report our feelings honestly. This can give the rest of our school new ideas and new things to think about. We can report to them situations that are taking place in our school and inform them on new and approved ideas for our society. By giving them honest and respectful opinions they will be prepared for what comes next. With todays on going rolling technology the importance of keeping our society updated is highly important. It is necessary the press of todays society stays free and is open to everyone.

In today’s society, Freedom of the Press is obviously still very active. It has very much evolved from print media to a more advanced and technological broadcasted media. The whole world revolves around the media. It is a crucial thing in our society to keep up to date with current situations. With Freedom of the Press, we are able to gather as one community and face whatever happens together. For example, yesterday, September 11th, the 9/11 tribute was broadcasted to televisions at homes to remorse together for the loss of all those who died in the horrible tragedy. Freedom of the Press is also used to criticize the works of people in our society or just any problems in general that people may see in the world and share their views. Freedom of the Press is also associated in schools.
Here in the Academy of Mount St. Ursula, we have the privilege to put this advantage to use. We have school newsletters, annual yearbooks, announcements, and even clubs with broadcasting opportunities. It is enjoying to students, as myself, who desire to possibly follow up with a career out of these, and in Ursula, we have the opportunity to practice them. It is as nice to share the news with others as it is hearing it and staying updated. Without the privilege of Freedom of the Press, we would be lost in our society.

Freedom of the press is not a topic that has been recently issued. It has been around for a very long time, even before the radio or the internet was invented.
Many people may wonder, are there limits to how much information the press can pass on to their readers? As a matter of fact, yes, there is a limit. However, do we all know what this limit is or where it stands? No.
Freedom of the press is as vital to our society as it is our homes and food. The people should know other opinions, while voicing out their own opinions, and the truth about certain subjects.
In AMSU, there should be a broader freedom of the press. We should be able to voice out our opinions as students and the attendees occupying this school – we know the pros and cons better than anyone else!

I believe that this class’s role in our school will almost be the same as the role of media in our society. In our society, although we do have ‘freedom of speech’, it is often also covered under the same idea that if your speech puts someone in danger, your right for freedom gets taken away. It will also be the same in this class; we have our freedom of speech until our words begin to put someone in danger. "A free press is not a privilege, but an organic necessity in a great society."
We will be sharing our information not only to liberate others, but to also update them on the schools doings. Though we will be able to share our opinions about the school, we may not have the opportunity to share our negative opinions on the school. It would seem to be violating our freedom of speech, but it’s only to keep fair and not to damage others, as done so in normal media today. Though as stated in the document, the internet has changed much for media. No one is going to tell you that you can’t say anything, because they have no say over what you can or cannot post; “in terms of opinion he or she can shout quite loudly to anyone who wants to listen.”
Well to sum this all up, our freedom of speech within the school can be quite the same as it is in society, but instead of getting the information or text from all adults, it’s nice to see us, adolescents, getting a chance to probably say how we feel about the things that go on in everyday society, or even just in school. It calls for a different way to express your opinions in a society where not so many opinions are expressed.

  18. The freedom of press allows for people to express their feelings, thoughts, and opinions. Media allows for this to happen a lot quicker and efficiently. What is media? According to Dictionary.com, media is defined as: the means of communication, as radio and television, newspapers, and magazines that reach or influence people widely. Before computers, television, and any technology, people were able to express their thoughts but it took a longer time to reach others. Thanks to media, people find out about things going around the world through television and radios, are able to communicate easier with computers, and can find out the latest gossip through magazines. Media plays a large role in our daily lives.
In this class we will be using computers in order to write the newspaper for our school and to take part in making the yearbook. Using media, we will be able to inform the school of the latest scoop and also take pictures and write about what has occurred in the latest yearbook. I believe that media is very important to know about and to utilize because it makes life so much easier.

  19. Freedom of the Press allows a person to voice their opinions about certain topics. A good way that you can let your voice be heard is by letting your opinions and statements get published in works such as newspapers, magazines, articles, etc. I believe that Media Arts and Applications greatly allows us students to express ourselves and let our ideas be heard by others.

  20. Freedom of the Press has undergone many changes overtime. Changes within the Freedom of the Press have helped bring about what we write and post today in our everyday newspapers, websites, and magazines. With this, AMSU will be able to freely write and print important information to help keep all of us up to date with important events. Not only will we be able to get news across to our fellow classmates we will also be able to print a yearbook for our seniors to remember their amazing 4 years at AMSU.
Freedom of the Press will allow students to have others read their writing. We all think of teachers to be the ones who have great writing skills but now it is our turn to show everyone else that we are as great as they are. There are also some limitations as to what we write. We do have to enforce some of the rules that limit us in what we want to write. These limitations won’t be overly dramatic, but they will help us learn to write things that can appeal to everyone and not just one group. We as a school need to remember that we are a whole and when we address things to the school we must try to make it in favor of everyone. We must also remember not to offend others with our writing and learn how to properly address certain issues.
Being part of a Media Arts and Applications course, it is our job to make sure things get written, printed, and edited on time. This will allow us to obtain great skills that we indeed might need along the way in our future careers. The basis of a good writer comes directly from the idea that we all are entitled to Freedom of the Press.
